Overview Ball Mask AuctionBall-1999 Mask Auction

1999 Golden Hour Gala

It was a "Who’s Who" of the Twin Cities. County Commissioners, civic and corporate leaders and medical center staff all came together to celebrate ten years of Level 1 trauma care at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC).

Close to 1,000 people attended "The Golden Hour Gala" hosted by HCMC and the Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation on October 22, 1999. The event raised more than $130,000 to support research, education and outreach efforts in trauma and burn care.

Guests mingled among more than 300 silent auction items with everything from weekend get-aways to rounds of golf at many of the most sought-after courses in Minnesota.

The live auction featured five items including a half-hour helicopter ride, a Sammy Sosa/Mark McGuire autographed baseball bat, a week at a fabulous condo in Lake Tahoe that included airfare, and a mask "Golden Memories ’99–Lake Superior and Minnesota" in a Plexiglas display case. The highlight of the evening was the final live auction item: dinner for eight to ten people, to be prepared by a chef from Tejas and served by surgeons Jorge Rodriguez, Art Ney, Michael West and Mark Odlund. The surgeons took the stage dressed as waiters with trays and towels and encouraged spirited bidding.

The program included a short video, "Take Me To HCMC," which told the stories of trauma patient Joseph Rice and burn patient Devin Eich and the outstanding care they received at HCMC. Their stories were moving and inspirational.

Art Ney, M.D., Director of Trauma Services and the Chair of the event, was pleased with the attendance. "We had representatives from every major department in the hospital, alumni, former patients, other hospitals, government and industry. It really shows how trauma affects people from all walks of life."

Major contributors to the event included pharmaceutical and medical supply companies, former trauma patients, HCMC physicians and departments, insurance companies and many more. "I am really grateful to all the people who helped to make this event such a huge success," said Dr. Ney. "The financial supporters and volunteers all pitched in and proceeds will allow us to really help future trauma and burn patients."
